Alila Fort Bishangarh towers above the dreamy countryside an hour north of Jaipur. It looks like something from a golden era past, all majestic and imposing.
The extensive renovations to turn the warrior fort of Alila Fort Bishangarh into a luxury boutique hotel have been undertaken with care and attention. Much of the original features, such as ornate arched windows and fairytale turrets, have been left intact.
The interiors are sleek and beautifully refined since this was not a rustic sort of renovation project. Gleaming marble floors, beautifully carved wardrobes, oversized granite bathtubs, pieces of mid-century modern furniture here and there – the look is an understated elegance that radiates charm.
Alila Fort Bishangarh | The Grand Suite
The hotel corridors meander and curve around the exposed rock of the hill on which the hotel sits. My grand suite was a generous 75 sqm. It boasts a king-size bed, a beautiful picture window and window seat. In addition, there was a seating area, reading chair, granite bathtub, separate rain shower, his and hers wash basins and wardrobes, and an entertainment unit hidden behind an exquisite cabinet. I was happy to find out that Wi-Fi works like a dream, a rarity in older properties where the walls are typically thick and WIFI impenetrable.
Enjoy the sweeping views of the Aravalli Mountain range and take a stroll down the ramps of the fort to the infinity pool, Mediterranean restaurant and fully equipped kids club below.
Nazaara | Indian fine-dining
Or take the elevator to the top floor to take in the 360 degrees views from the rooftop bar and restaurant Nazaara. It was so enchanting up here that I opted to eat here twice, underneath the Japuri stars. The thali of the chef’s recommendations was delicious, which I washed down with some surprisingly tasty Indian wine. I say surprisingly because I didn’t know India made much wine at all. But both the Indian wines I had at Nazaara were lovely. It goes to show that one should always trust the waiter’s recommendations.
Alila Experiences | Unique encounters
Alila Fort Bishangarh offers a range of Alila Experiences. I had a particularly fun camel ride around the village of Bishangarh and got to meet some of the locals. There are also experiences to meet the local artisans and have lunch with a Bishangarh family, which I really recommend. The village is poor, and it goes towards supporting the local economy.
Among the fine hotels of the world
I have been lucky enough to stay at some fine properties around the world, but there’s something so unique and enchanting about Alila Fort Bishangarh. It looks like nowhere I have stayed before. The renovations have transformed it into a stunning boutique hotel that oozes character and style. Make Alila Fort Bishangarh a part of your itinerary when you travel around India’s Golden Triangle.
